Keep Hydrated. During road trips it is essential to keep well hydrated to avoid any unnecessary side effects. Keeping hydrated combats fatigue, headaches, and keeps you in general wellness. Just because you’re on a road trip doesn’t mean you need to suffer. Water is also necessary considering how stuffy cars may get, especially in the summer in a car with no air conditioning.
Snacks. Similar to water, snacks are essential. To keep up the blood sugar levels to avoid grumpiness and tiredness. Good sustenance is needed for long journeys as it helps to refocus the mind. If you haven’t prepared snacks there are usually convenience stores at petrol stations or franchises at service stations so you could always plan it into your trip or just go with the flow!
Charging Equipment. In the digital age we have a mass of technology that seems to need to be constantly charged. To ensure your music or navigation doesn’t quit halfway through your trip remember to pack your chargers and place them in a location that is convenient to access. If the technology you need to charge is your (electric) car then you will need to research beforehand to avoid being stranded on the motorway awaiting rescue.
Music. Every good road trip has an epic playlist. Prepare beforehand to blow away your friends or family with the greatest hits out there. If your music tastes are alternative compared to the company in your car it may be considerate to let the member with the most agreeable music to have control of the playlist. It is also good to hand over control to someone else other than the driver to avoid distracting them.
Navigation. Road trips can to be a tricky situation when you’re in unfamiliar territory. Whether you research beforehand, use a Satnav or your phone, or use an old-fashioned map, make sure you have some form of navigation in place to avoid getting lost in the wilderness. If all else fails, use the signs of the roads and hopefully they can point you in the right direction.
Company. Solo road trips can be great as they give you time to yourself and your favourite music/podcast. However, road trips are great vehicles for creating memories with those closest to you. On especially long road trips companions stave away the boredom and provide great entertainment. Just make sure you choose who you bring along carefully as you don’t want someone who needs to use the restroom every 30 minutes.
Take Regular Breaks. As the signs on the road say ‘tiredness can kill’. This is more of a tip for drivers as road trips can be tiring. Taking breaks is good for stretching the legs and getting some fresh air – both of these things will help to improve concentration. It may also be an idea to hydrate and get some food at this point too so you are completely reenergised before getting back in your transport.
Keep It Positive. Road trips can be stressful, and moods can get low so try to keep everything upbeat and positive if you want to have the best memories (and your friends and family) left at the end.
