Greek Paradise in Northumberland

It’s 3-in-1!

Located in the small village of Belsay, is an English Heritage site which consists of Belsay Hall, the Quarry Gardens, and the medieval castle. All part of the same estate, it is roughly half a mile between the hall and the castle. The castle was originally the main residence for Sir Charles Monck and his family before he built the Grecian revival mansion. Inspired his trip to Greece for his honeymoon, the hall is built in a Grecian style with stone, many pillars and geometry.

Keeping up the family tradition of bringing the exotic to England, Monck’s grandson Sir Arthur Middleton (the original name of Monck) imported foreign species of plants the garden to create a unique space with its own microclimate.

After your return walk if you’re still hungry for more why not visit the tearoom which makes use of the original Victorian kitchen?
