Set in the middle of the countryside, this remote abbey is the perfect spot for a family picnic!
Founded in 1139 as housing for Augustinian canons, Thornton Abbey is remotely located in North Lincolnshire near the Humber. What remains today is the Abbey, octagonal Chapter House, and the 14thCentury Gatehouse which is one of the earliest large-scale structures made of bricks in England.
Separated by a distance of 230m and friendly sheep, you can get a good view of each structure and feel how imposing the Gatehouse really is.
The quiet location of the Abbey makes it a great place for practicing mindfulness and appreciating the landscape. For families there are many spots to sit down and enjoy quality time together. If you do bring food I recommend keeping away from the sheep.

Important: When crossing between the Abbey and Gatehouse there are two gates to keep in the sheep, remember to close the gates properly so the sheep don’t go walkabout.

Disclaimer: Not strictly the North East, but too pretty to leave out!
