Another Castle?!

Yes, another castle!

View of Barnard Castle from the Weir

If you have scanned through this website you will have noticed how many castles there are in the North East of England. You may have also noticed how each castle is different and uniquely positioned. Belsay Castle is remotely located in the small town of Belsay, Richmond Castle perches atop the historical town of Richmond, and Scarborough Castle is precariously built on a cliff. Each castle has its own character with its own heritage and blending with the heritage of its surroundings.

Barnard Castle is unique as it is discreetly placed beside a market town. You may question how discreet a castle can be but Barnard Castle is positioned behind the town’s church and other buildings so unless you come over the bridge on the West side, you may miss the castle entirely.

The castle is also unique as it is situated above a weir and beside a woodland area. After visiting the castle you can take a stroll along the path or have a wander through the charming market town.
