The Angel of the North
Installed a little over 20 years ago in 1998, Anthony Gormley’s award-winning public artwork is not only famous in the North but worldwide. With over 33 million people seeing the sculpture every year it is one of the most viewed pieces of art in the world. Perched on a hill over the A1, the Angel of the North embraces visitors to the North of England with its 54m wide wings.
The Angel of the North is made of steel with a copper coating so that it will be able to endure the high winds in the region and last 100 years. The materials used are meant to be reminiscent of the North’s relationship with industry, in particular coal mining. This is why the artwork is located above coal mines to remind those visiting of the area’s proud history. The Angel of the North also became a symbol of the future and of hope as it marked the beginning of regeneration projects in the Gateshead and Quayside areas.
Although it appears to be a landmark that is seen in passing, rather than visiting, there are car parks nearby and paths to walk up to the sculpture. If you have a small amount of spare time it is worth the visit to see this 20m tall artwork to understand why it is so loved by locals.
