Known as the country’s first beach resort, Scarborough remains popular to this day for its sea views, option of two beaches, and historical roots.

North Bay

The North Bay of Scarborough is the quieter beach of the two. It is less commercialised, so it is usually less crowded. However, not to be overshadowed by its more well-known sibling beach, the North Bay is one of only two Blue Flag beaches in the North East, of England. Blue Flag status is an eco-label that rates the environmental and water quality standard of those that apply. As such, Scarborough’s North Bay is a tidy beach great for pitching up an umbrella, soaking in some sun and the occasional dip in the water. The water quality and high tide also makes it a great location for surfers and water sports fans.

South Bay

The South Bay is the quintessential family-fun, British seaside town. Part harbour, part beach, part arcades – the South Bay really has it all. With a large beach and a number of seaside attractions it really has all the makings for a jam-packed day out for families. Attracting locals and tourists alike, there is diversity in the visitors with some choosing to make repeat visits.

One Scarborough

Separated visually by Scarborough’s Castle perched on a protruding rocky promontory, the two bays are still connected by one long promenade that capitalises on the panoramic views of the North Sea. Fancy a higher view? Then trek up to the top of Scarborough to view both bays from the 12th Century castle.
If you were to choose one coastal town or beach to visit in the North East, Scarborough is the recommendation for the variety of activities and choice of two beaches.
