Jeremy Clarkson as inspiration?
When thinking of possible topics for my Master’s project all I knew is that I had to be passionate about it – so I decided on a travel-based website. The next question was, ‘what would the content look like?’
That was when, watching the latest season of The Grand Tour, I was struck with inspiration. Although I knew I wouldn’t be dropped in the middle of a desert forced to build my own vehicle or driving precariously across a bridge that could cave at any given moment, I took the concept of a ‘Grand Tour’ and adapted it into ‘The North East Tour’.

History of The Grand Tour
The Grand Tour was traditionally referred to as ‘young lords travelling abroad to learn about art, architecture and antiquity’ (National Trust, 2019). The concept is deeply associated with the arts and history which befits the United Kingdom since it has over 400+ English Heritage sites. The North East itself is a great place for occasional self-enlightenment or admiring ‘architecture and antiquity’ because of the number of castles and abbeys dotted across the region.

Why the North East?
I chose the North East as I love living here. Despite being located here for over four years now, I haven’t taken advantage of all the natural beauty and historical sites in the surrounding area. Part of the reason for my lack of exploring is a busy life and completing university, the other is finding information. With information scattered across multiple platforms (websites, Instagram, Facebook) and organisations (English Heritage, County Councils, tourist information centres) it can be time-consuming for visitors and locals alike to find places to visit. That is why this website is designed to be a one-stop for sightseeing destinations in the North East.
The North East has so much to offer that it should be easy for people to find out about it!
