5 Reasons to Visit the North East

Hint: Great People, Beautiful Scenery, History.

The people. Each region of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland has their own distinct personality. With that personality may come an assumption on the friendliness of its inhabitants. Londoners have the image of being brusque and unapproachable, but when placed in the context of the fast-paced, city environment it is expected. In cities across the world people have little time for small talk due to their busy work (and personal) lives – if you do find a nice person to talk to on the underground then you’ve hit the jackpot!

That is why when you come up north to the smaller cities and quaint little towns you are more likely to find community spirit. The detachment from the manic lifestyles of city-dwellers creates an uplifted mood making for pleasant interactions with strangers. Combined with the general northern hospitality, you may not want to leave once you visit!

The natural beauty. Due to smaller cities and towns in the North East, there remains more natural countryside than other urban areas in the rest of the United Kingdom. Not to mention the beautiful landscape that is the North York Moors National Park that covers 554 square miles with 26 miles of coastline.

Maybe classed as ‘unnatural’ beauty but the North East also has a lot of industrial real estate due to its history (read the ‘History of the North East’ to find out more) that creates an authentic and original landscape difficult to see anywhere else.

The fascinating history. With 50+ English Heritage sites in the North East and Yorkshire, there is an (over)abundance of sights to see. Ranging from medieval castles to a Cold War bunker every visitor’s interests are met. The inescapable beauty of the North East is evident when visiting a location in the heart of a market town or on a remote Holy Island.

A different culture. The famous northern hospitality has produced a lively atmosphere in most communities. Many places, towns and cities, are populated with various restaurants, cafes and pubs that cater for a diversity in tastes. There are also famous local delicacies up here such as the Parmo (look at your own risk of salivating uncontrollably) or the Lemon Top.

Warning: Each area also has its own language and accent so don’t be concerned if a person at a pub seems to be speaking a language other than English.

FUN! If anything, northerners know how to have fun! You would be hard-pressed not to find somewhere exciting during the day or night. However, if crowded or loud places are not your scene then there are many more tranquil places to visit too (check out the piece on ‘Thornton Abbey & Gatehouse’ for a quiet family picnic spot).
